Neighborhood: Financial DistrictGreat classes taught by people who've actually spent some time in the industry. Good handy location downtown (across from the TransAmerica building) and great classroom labs of equipment. They provide you with a binder full of course notes upon finishing the class, too, which is always nice. I took an advanced CSS course with them, and the instructor had a great mix of both by-the-book training as well as 'what I did in real life scenarios with a client' smarts - that's always a good mix.
My only disappointment is the cost of classes, but sadly that's more to do with the state of modern education costs than these folks. Still, if you want to be taught by people who know their stuff, this would be a place to go.

Great way to learn what you need to know about Excel! I was pleased with my instructor and the info that I attained. More to come as I take more courses!

I took some classes at Academy X late last year. The facilities are nice but I think, depending on what you take and who your instructor is, the quality really varies.
I took an advanced DW class and instead of a big binder full of materials, they gave me 4 sheets of paper with info for the whole class (the exercises were sort of on the dull side as well.). It appears that they didn't really have any written materials for an advanced class.
The instructor was also not that impressive. She just spent time teaching us how to bookmark stuff from del.i.cious etc. Eh, I wasn't impressed.
Their classes are not cheap so I expected more.

I paid $1,950.00 for a web design course a year ago. Most of the students in my class were familiar with Illustrator, Photoshop and some were working in web design. This was all new to me, so after they changed the instructor and he didn't follow the workbook I left and I didn't even ask for a refund.
Recently I received an e-mail from Academy X offering me a $100.00 discount on any class. I told them to take me off there mailing list since I didn't have a good experience. They said I could re-take the course where I left off. I thought that was a nice offer since it had been over the six month cut-off time. So, I started taking the classes and I felt I was getting more out of the class the second time around.
Well, one hour before the fifth class Stephen Fraga leaves a message on my cell phone telling me not to come back because I was wasting my time, the instructor's time as well as the other students. He said he wanted to work something out, so I asked him what he meant by that. He meant I should get a tutor on Craigslist. I asked for the current CS3 workbooks, he said no since I already had the old Macromedia books. I asked him for a refund since he wouldn't let me finish the course after he said he would. Maybe I could pay for a Craigslist tutor with that money. Again, he said no. He was happy to take my money, didn't follow up after I stopped going to class (shows how much he cares) and then he reneges on his offer to let me retake the class. Maybe potential students might be better off hiring a private tutor for $25/hr. -it's turns out to be less expensive than the $1,950.00 web design course at Academy X.
Great facilities, great trainer! I did the 5 day Apache/MySQL/PHP boot camp, and even though I have been doing development for years, it was good to fill in the gaps. In addition, the facilities were nice -- top end development machines and each developer had two monitors - one for development and one for the instructor's demonstrations. I would highly recommend AcademyX.
Trainer called in sick and we were given a sub who wasn't very good. I asked for a re-take. On the day of the re-take the instructor didn't even show up. I would never take a class there again.
I took a VBA Excel course at Academy X. It was a well thought out course that covered the basics. The class was very small (2 people) so we got a lot of personal attention. The facility is professional, clean, and in a class A office building in downtown. I would recommend Academy X for training.
The only downside was that the computers weren't set up for our course, so we ended up wasting some time. Also, the instructor was a seasoned programmer, but didn't have a lot of hands on experience in VBA.
Excellent instructors, patient and very knowledgeable. Great hands on training.
I signed up for a summer-long course here but it didn't click for me, I'm a content guy, not a tech guy, so I dropped out. I got a full refund from the school and solid referrals to experts in the field I'm interested in. Very impressive. I will add, my teacher was excellent.
Gene from AcademyX came to the office today to teach a group of us an Intermediate Excel class.
He went at the perfect speed and I was able to understand everything he was doing and why. I learned how to do Pivot Tables & Vlookups, which I will be able to use a lot at work. I wished he would have also showed us macros, but I guess we ran out of time!
The only thing that I wished I had learned were more keyboard shortcuts. He showed us how to find a list of a bunch of them, but realistically I doubt I will take the time to read through 5 pages of keyboard shortcuts!
The instructor actually made jokes that were funny...that's pretty rare!

I just finished a week long intensive at AcademyX (Java Fundamentals). The primary instuctor for the course, Ruven, is a phenomenal teacher. I have never clicked with a tech class as well as I did this week. The pacing was engaging, the instruction clear, and troubleshooting helpful.
The facilities could be a bit better. I was freezing cold throughout the week - I ended up wearing my winter parka pretty much all day long. Also, the room was right by the kitchen where the coffee would sit for hours, going rancid. The smell was awful (but Im a bit smell sensitive). Finally, my computer station had intermittent connection issues. Not enough to get in the way of the projects, but a bit of a slowdown at the beginning of the day.
All in all, I highly recommend this course, although it was very expensive for an individual like moi to pay for. Between the cost of the class, and missing out on a contract for a week, I paid a lot for what I learned. Seems they could have that special discount for indivs rather than for those students being sponsored by big companies with training budgets!
